Jazz Goals

Writer's picture: Renee EymaRenee Eyma

Lately, I've been thinking about the evolving rhythms of my work. In my past experiences as a consultant, the planning, coordination, and conversations required to complete a deliverable or event felt almost orchestral. But as a leadership coach and advisor, my presence in the moment is far more impactful than any pre-planning on my part. And that's just like jazz.

Jazz masters experiment, take risks, or move in new directions, confidently trusting their counterparts to meet them in those moments. While both musicians are "doing" in the sense that they are playing instruments, their willingness to "be" with one another is what makes their music so beautiful to experience.

As I set my annual goals, I'm finding it helpful to distinguish between my doing goals (specific tasks and milestones) and what I am affectionately referring to as my "jazz" goals where the focus is less about me accomplishing something and more about me being intentional in how I show up in different situations and contexts. And I get rewarded whether I succeed or fail in those moments because I'll benefit from continued learning, grace, and patience.

As you look toward the coming year, what are your jazz goals? I'm sharing one of my personal jazz favorites here in case you can use an extra dose of inspiration!

Warmly,

Renee
